Notions of landscape include expansiveness and extension; landscape is seemingly intangible, ever changing and elusive. Landscape architecture then is the introduction of an informed transformation in the field or condition that in essence is in flux. The resulting landscape space is the physical enactment of a way of critical thinking expressed in operational strategies that are articulated and clear(but not static),inclusive and projective, transformative and possibly conservative, simply yet sophisticated, and bold and visionary if possible. The independent design project fosters the development of an understanding of what is, and is not, a landscape proposition, and stimulates the search of new ways of engaging landscape. The investigation of an idea is underlying and crucial to all design projects. The concept of landscape architecture as a way of strategic thinking that manipulates time-related components (rather than a more static/ finite approach) is addressed proactively in a number of studios. |
